Look who decided to walk across the still wet cement floor, leaving tiny paw prints in his wake. The Project Supervisor, otherwise known as Jack and more recently other names that I won’t post here, decided that he needed to look out the bathroom window now, right now.

The bathroom door is being stripped in the backyard, so I put up a barricade to keep Jack out. It is going to take more than my feeble attempts to stop him. Now that he is successfully inside the bathroom he refuses to budge. I am reduced to opening cans of cat food outside the bathroom door, but he is having none of that.

He is lying underneath the window on the still wet cement, safely out of reach, and I swear he is laughing at me.

Our house has never had a shower and now we don’t have a tub. Oh, the dreaded phase of our project! I have not been looking forward to it. This is one way to get me to the gym…if not to work out, at least to shower.

The old tub is solid cast iron so we expected it to be heavy, just not 500 lbs heavy! Actually, we have no way of knowing how much the tub really weighs. But, it took 4 big, strong guys to move the tub. They claimed it felt like 500-600 lbs.

The closet doors are now installed.

All the woodwork has been primed {sorry!}. We received some encouragement to go the next step, leave the wood natural and stain it. I hate to disappoint anyone, but we learned our lesson about staining woodwork that was originally painted when we restored the hallway.

It took 4-5 guys to carry the tub down a very narrow stairway. It was slow going with lots of stops and false starts. I looked on and just hoped that the steps were strong enough to hold. They were. The tub made it down without incident.

The cat, who we call the project supervisor because he likes to oversee all the work, wanted no part of moving the tub and for once was nowhere to be found. Smart cat.

The tub, old sink and toilet were given to a friend of a friend who used them in their own bathroom remodel project.

And I thought our kitchen couldn’t get any worse! The ceiling had to be opened to update the bathroom plumbing. We are adding additional support and reinforcing the ceiling beams underneath the tub. Although, our new tub will weigh less than half of what the old tub weighed, better to be safe then sorry.

And I am running out of rooms!

I went through all the boxes the other day and it was like Christmas morning. I was overjoyed to find this little light. It goes perfectly in our dining room. I smile every time I see it.

As a rule I try not to spend more than $250. I buy what speaks to me and don’t worry about it’s value or collectibility.

Any time I pull out the camera our corgi WInston strikes a pose. He is our resident supermodel.

We decided to enlarge the opening of the linen closet and add another door. Our contractor found a salvage door that he scaled down and rebuilt to match the existing linen closet door. In the photo above, the original closet door is on the left and the “new” closet door on the right.

Painting the doors will hide a multiple of sins like the wood grain going in different directions and patches around the door handle. We are thrilled with the new door.

The opening for the linen closet is ready to be framed in.

I am super excited about the bathroom remodel and don’t want to sound like a big baby, but actively using a bathroom while you are remodeling it really, really sucks! A lot.

A hundred years ago just having indoor plumbing was the height of luxury and convenience. Only having one full bath in 2010 is the height of poverty and inconvenience. I’m kidding, sort-of. This is the phase of the project where I start to get cranky. A lot.

The electrical is done and the plumbing rough in completed.

Bathroom linen closet before.

The contractor has taken advantage of useable space found behind the wall to expand the linen closet. We desperately need the additional storage.

Our linen closet is now much larger.

This picture gives you a sense of the narrowness of the room and the slope of the ceiling. The ceiling follows the roofline.

Down with the walls! Look at all that extra usable space behind the wall. It even has the original wood flooring. For a house that is in desperate need of storage space, this is a very happy find.

The original woodwork has been stripped, although not too carefully since we intend to repaint it. We will still be using the bathroom during the construction process. This is the only bathtub in the house…and no shower!

Only the bottom portion of the walls will be removed. The walls will be white subway tile. We are hoping to save and repair the plaster ceiling and top portion of the walls.

We have been talking about redoing our bathroom for years. When I say years, I mean 7. So when we decided to remodel the bathroom our conversation went something like this…

Me: I really want to redo our bathroom.

Husband: So, lets do it.

Me: Really?

Husband: Yes.

Me: Are you sure?

Husband: Yes.

This conversation took place over the phone during my husband’s lunch break. By the time he came home from work that evening I had ordered everything for the bathroom down to the switch plate covers and the shower curtain rings. The contractor was scheduled to start on Monday. I had set up interviews with electricians and plumbers for the following day. No turning back now!

We are officially halfway done restoring the house. We have unofficially been on a break from working on the house for the past 3 years. The kitchen and main bathroom haven’t been upgraded since we bought the house. They are still awful!

List of projects and rooms left to be restored:
drum roll please…

Kitchen
Bathroom
2 Upstairs Bedrooms
Sleeping Porch
Back steps and stone patio
Put in a back yard and landscaping
Garage
New Fence

Hopefully, we will get either the bathroom or kitchen started and finished in 2009. Get ready for lots of inspirational kitchen and bathroom photos in the mean time. Planning is the fun part!
