Hi Crystal! It sounds like you are my house twin.

From what you have described, I agree that your house could have been built 20-30+ years earlier. It seems a little strange that they would have put a clawfoot tub in a house built in 1941.

I just came across your blog today and read EVERY entry. I’ve made notes, laughed and smiled and nodded my head MANY times. We were originally told, during the buying process, that our bungalow was built in 1941. After reading your blog, I’m not so sure. I think it’s much older. Our one and only bathroom has an original clawfoot tub and our neighborhood is full of Victorians. The owners of the bungalow next door say their home was built in 1956, but they also think it’s much older. We have original windows, with a pully system, built-in bookshelves on either side of the fireplace and windows above each built-in. The only other built-in is in the dining room, but it’s a primitive style (that I adore). The home is full of original woodwork (exposed in the living and dining rooms and painted over in every other room). Our front door is original and so is the hardware (the backdoor, closet doors, basement door and bathroom doors are also original-they’re missing from the two bedrooms). The door knobs, in this house alone, were one of the reasons I forced my hubby to agree to the purchase. The original plaster walls have been covered with wood paneling in every room except for the bath and one bedroom. I assume it was a 1970s remodel. We have the original grate/vent from the original coal burning furnace, in the large hallway. I adore that grate!The wood floors are also original throughout (although we had to recover the kitchen floors as a band-aid attempt until we can afford an overhaul), but I’m pretty sure they have been refinished at least once (probably during the 1970s remodel).
It’s funny our similarities. My husband is also the chef and watched Food Network like it’s his job. The kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom are also our untouched rooms (although I see you’re doing a bathroom remodel now)!
I’d love to chat and pick your brain. What a passion the bungalow way of life is. My dream, as a young child, was to own one some day. When we were looking for our first house, it’s ALL I wanted. Thank goodness my husband loves to please me I will definitely check back often. Good luck, with the rest of the remodel. I cannot wait to see the results!

Wow! You guys really pay attention.

My husband, who is taller than me, likes the height of the medicine cabinet mirror and doesn’t think there is a problem. I stand at 5’5″ and feel the mirror could be a little lower. I suspect the medicine cabinet ended up at it’s current height because of the way the original plumbing/vents were installed.

Although now would be the time to lower the medicine cabinet, we are leaning towards leaving the medicine cabinet as is…I’ve kind-of grown used to it.

You mentioned in an earlier post that your bathroom medicine cabinet and mirror was unusually high. Are you planning to lower it? If so, can you lower the existing frame or do you have to rebuild it?

It looks like the same size as our main bathroom, around 6×7′. I think the sloped roof gives it character. We’re doing our kitchen first, so it’s going to be a while before the bathroom gets done…

Looks very nice so far! I just did this last year and boy what a pain it was having only one bathroom that was getting remodeled. I long for the day when I can figure out a 2nd BA in our little house.
